Introduction
The Master of Science Program in Chemical Engineering (MSc ChE) is designed to provide you with a firm grounding in the broad fundamentals of chemical engineering and familiarity with several specialized areas. This approach fosters versatility and leads to more professional options. The MSc ChE programme is offered by the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering (ChBE) at NUS. The latest (2019) London-based Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd (QS) World University Rankings has placed NUS Chemical Engineering as amongst the world’s top 10. Graduates from the MSc ChE programme have held professional positions in areas such as manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, environmental science & engineering, design and construction, petrochemicals, biomedical and biotechnology, food processing, microelectronics and advanced materials, among others.
The program can be completed in one year (full-time) or two years (part-time).
Programme Structure
Coursework programmes leading to the Master of Science (MSc) are normally conducted in the evenings and are awarded once the candidates pass the relevant examinations in a prescribed number of subjects. Students may enrol in any of these programmes on a part-time or full-time basis. However, International candidates who are not long-term residents of Singapore at the time of application are only eligible to apply for the full-time MSc programmes, and if offered admission, they are to be registered as full-time students.
Typically the study workload for students are as follow:
Part-time
- Classes: Normally take 2 modules each semester (i.e. generally attend lectures 2 evenings per week).#
- Maximum workload per semester:12 MCs*
- Period of candidature
- Minimum residency: 50% of required MCs
- Normal Course Duration: 5 semesters / 2.5 years
- Maximum candidature: 8 semesters / 4 years
Full-time
- Classes: Normally take 3-5 modules each semester (i.e. generally attend lectures between 3-5 evenings per week).
- Maximum workload per semester: 16 – 20 MCs*
- Period of candidature
- Minimum residency: 50% of required MCs
- Normal Course Duration: 3 semesters / 1.5 years
- Maximum candidature: 4 semesters / 2 years
*A graduate module is normally equivalent to 4 MCs.
Graduate classes (including lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions) are usually conducted in the evenings from 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm from Mondays to Fridays.
Admission Requirements
Prospective student should have a Bachelor’s degree with honours or its equivalent from a good University, in an area related to the intended programme of study; or a Bachelor’s degree with a relevant NUS Graduate Certificate with a minimum CAP as imposed by the Host Department of the intended programme of study.
Candidates with other qualifications and achievements deemed to be suitably prepared for the programme of study may also be considered. Candidates are also expected to be proficient in English as the medium of instruction in NUS is English. GRE scores are not required.
The above are minimum requirements and do not guarantee admission. Selection of candidates for admission is on a competitive basis. Admission decisions are based on multiple considerations, including the number and quality of applicants and the capacity of the programme applied to.
English Language Requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate their English proficiency by means of TOEFL / IELTS test scores. Applicants may be waived from this requirement if they completed their degree programme taught entirely in English, situated in an English speaking country, for example (non exhaustive list) Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, United Kingdom, USA.
To meet the English requirement for our MSc programmes in Engineering, the minimum score expected is :
- 85 (for TOEFL internet-based test) or
- 6.0 (for IELTS (Academic)).
