Introduction

The Master of Science (Exercise and Sport Studies) programme is designed for participants with an interest in physical education, sports, fitness, health and wellness. It is structured to provide a balanced coverage of pedagogy, psychosocial, management and scientific aspects of human movement. It aims to enable professionals to upgrade their qualifications either for career advancement in schools or to qualify them to work in other sport science and management positions.

The programme aims to provide you with:

  • A greater knowledge base in human movement studies
  • A career path for the study of exercise science and sport studies
  • Leadership skills for use in the sport and fitness area
  • Research perspectives on the field of human movement studies
  • An ability to undertake research in your working environment
  • The skills of a reflective practitioner
  • A conceptual grasp of issues affecting the future of sport and physical education in Singapore
Programme Structure

The programme offers two options.

1. Coursework Only Route

Students who choose this route must complete the following courses:

One core course (4AUs)
MES900 Research Methods in Exercise and Sport Studies

Six specialisation courses of 4AUs (24AUs)
Other than the core and specialisation courses, you may select one open elective course offered across all NIE Master Degree programmes, including Master of Science (Exercise and Sport Studies).

One integrative research project course (2AUs)
MES901 Integrative Project

A total of 30AUs is required to graduate.

2. Coursework with Dissertation Route

Students who choose this route must complete the following courses:

One core course (4AUs)MES900 Research Methods in Exercise and Sport Studies

Five specialisation courses of 4AUs (20AUs)Other than the core and specialisation courses, you may select one open elective course offered across all NIE Master Degree programmes, including Master of Science (Exercise and Sport Studies).

Dissertation (6AUs)
Students will have to write a dissertation of not more than 15,000 words.

A total of 30AUs is required to graduate.

Admissions Requirements

You should have:

a. A good Bachelor’s degree, preferably with strong honours, in exercise and sport studies or a related field; or

bA good Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university, not in exercise and sport studies, with a diploma (credit) or postgraduate diploma in exercise and sport studies (credit) or its equivalent; and

c. Professional experience that commensurate with the programme’s content and outcomes.

Interviews may be conducted to determine applicant’s suitability for the programme.
